MARIUS
« MARIUS » was born from the partnership of two friends and their shared passion for wine: Jérôme Malet, owner of Domaine Sarda-Malet close to Perpignan, and Frédéric Engerer, President of Château Latour in Pauillac and Domaine d’Eugénie in Vosne-Romanée.
« MARIUS » is a unique marriage of the rugged, promising terroir of Perpignan and the iconic Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Nestled among the foothills of Mount Canigou and facing the Mediterranean Sea, a bit more than 1 ha of vines make their home in this region not traditionally known for this Bordeaux varietal.
The Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 1997 using massal selection of vegetal material carefully selected from old vines from one of the most prestigious and historically relevant plot of vines in Pauillac. This Cabernet Sauvignon was then grafted onto the Gravesac rootstock (known for its high quality and low vigor) then planted on tertiary red gunz soil with south facing slopes. This varietal is well adapted to the tough local climate and produces well aerated clusters of small and concentrated berries.
The name “Marius” is a respectful nod to Frédéric’s grandfather, Marius Pons (born in 1909) who was a wine negociant in Narbonne until 1987.
Our first vintage was produced in 2004.
